Dining / Living Room

Stepping from the entry into the formal living room, one first encounters the panoramic view of the residence and Lake Austin beyond. Because of the floor to ceiling glazing, the grass and landscaping is as much an interior design element as the rugs and artwork. The living room flows naturally into the kitchen informal dining area and backyard.

The living room and dining room form a seamless living space, but the sliding doors at the dining room allow the dining room to be separated as needed. The dining room also serves as a work and meeting space. With the doors closed, the focus within the dining room is redirected from the lake view to the front courtyard view.

The linear axis of the entry boardwalk and entry way direct the view towards Lake Austin. The entry provides a transition between the serene courtyard garden and the energy of Lake Austin.

The floating cabinets, light-washed plaster, and view to the entry courtyard give the dining room an ethereal quality where conversation and creativity freely flow.

Color Kinetics LED lighting and polished plaster wall transforms the functional storage cabinets into an art installation.

From the informal dining space, the barriers between the interior and exterior dissolve. All becomes one.

The full material palette used in the project interacts in this view of the living room from the backyard at dusk.

Site / Office

It's hard to have a bad day at the office, when one is able to enjoy a coffee break while watching the Herons, Swans, and Egrets frolic a few feet from your desk.

The office is surrounded by the soft sound of water, natural light from the glass ceiling and a 180-degree view of the lake. The space has an expansive and peaceful feeling.

The reflecting pond mirrors Lake Austin. The reflecting pond and pool create the illusion of Lake Austin surrounding the home and cool the home on a hot summer day.

The black granite finish allows the pool to stand as a strong architectural element that connects the home to Lake Austin beyond. The Solarium office boasts its own private entrance, bathroom and unique lighting.

The pool organizes the office and the multipurpose boat dock, which includes covered seating, storage, a boat dock and an expansive cantilevered sky deck. At 45 feet long, the pool can be used for laps or recreation. The pool features spa-jets for relaxing and a custom-built swim-jet for exercising.

The flowing reflecting pond imparts a calming influence on both public and private living spaces.

The floor to ceiling glazing blurs the boundaries between the interior and exterior. The home encourages outdoor living at its most refined.

Upstairs

Solid massaranduba sheaths the stairway creating the sense that it has been carved out of a block of wood.

The upstairs library provides an informal relaxation and workspace. The backlit acrylic panels and doors create a dynamic space that some liken to a finely finished sailing yacht.

The upstairs library features custom built-in features perfect for a board game, homework projects, or simply reading a book.

The backlit acrylic panels frame the reading nook, and the glass dormer provides a view to the neighborhood beyond. The reading nook is a great place to take in a Texas thunderstorm.

A larger nook in the multi-purpose room looks out over Lake Austin and provides a comfortable sleep space for sleepovers or guests.

Even the bathrooms have spectacular views

The multi-purpose room features a climbing wall and a hidden passage to one of the bedrooms through the wall.

The upstairs media room integrates a lounging, sleeping couch with a panoramic, 360 degree photo mural.

One bedroom features built-in bunk beds that convert into a single bed for the growing child, evoking the feeling of a finely finished yacht. Four oversized drawers under the beds provide hidden storage and the walls conceal built-in storage.

The green roof adjacent to the upstairs bedrooms surrounds separate, private deck space with a lush sedum garden. Advanced green roof technology minimizes water usage and allows the plants to thrive in less than four inches of soil.

Dock / Yard

As the sun sets, the interior comes alive in a dance of light.

The view across the pool back towards the maser bedroom and living room at sunset is simply spectacular.

The boat dock serves as the focal point for outdoor activity. On one side, an intimate covered deck provides the perfect place to relax next to the pool. A large shaded deck provides the jumping off point for a range of water sports. The boat lift silently hoists the boat out of the water for storage.

On top, a dramatic sky deck features outdoor seating, a jetted spa, and a third rooftop garden.

The landscaping design preserved and maximized grass and natural areas to provide a lush setting for the architecturally strong home.

The home takes on surprising appearances from different angles.

This view from the sky deck shows the relation of the home, office and pool.

The covered seating area provides an ideal setting for a reading, conversation or simply watching the children swim. The boat dock is beyond and the sky deck above.

Front / Entrance

A security gate provides privacy from the street and creates a sense of mystery as one approaches the home.

The entry courtyard provides a glimpse of the special home that lies beyond the front door. The dining room doors open completely connecting the home to the courtyard.

An artistic eye has been applied to the landscaping plan as well.

The dining room glass doors slide into a concealed pocket and turn the dining room into an outdoor dining space.

The juxtaposition of the outdoor gardens with the interior spaces is most dramatic at night.

Kitchen

The kitchen serves as the modern hearth of the home and flows seamlessly to the informal dining area, living room and family room. A caterer's kitchen is tucked away to facilitate entertaining without interfering with it.

The kitchen is organized around distinct work centers, including a food prep center, baking center, cook center, food storage and bar. The organization of these work centers allows the chef to work without excluding family and guests. Only top of the line appliances are used, including Gaggenau, Dacor and Subzero.

The informal dining table sits on the edge of the outdoors and can accommodate 14 people. Sitting down for breakfast is like being on vacation.

The back-lit glass surfaces in the kitchen reflect the lakeside view during the day and at night lights up to become a piece of art.

The carefully-constructed german glass walls slide into a concealed pocket to completely eliminate any barriers between the inside and outside. The living areas become an extension of the outside, and vice versa.

Master Suite

The Master Suite features the master bedroom, concealed work area, separate his and her bathrooms and entrance to private office.

Her bathroom is a private retreat. It includes a separate soaking tub, dual vanities, washer/dryer, desk, television and custom furniture-quality cabinets for the clothing & shoe conniseur.

The Master Bedroom itself is a peninsula surrounded by the reflecting pond and pool. The relationship of the Master Bedroom to the reflecting pond mirrors the orientation of the lot to the lake. The views from the Master are sublime, engaging and peaceful.

During the daytime, the line between the Master and the outside space almost disappears. At night, a privacy curtain turns the master suite into a private escape, and during the day a retractable solar shade can keep the room dark.

Because of the black granite-like finish on the pool, the water surrounding the master becomes a compelling and relaxing design element.

The view back to the Master Bedroom at night expresses the vision of the project, which includes celebration of the play of light, union of the indoor and outdoors, incredible attention to detail and disciplined use of materials.
